At left, the historic Dunedin railway station, start of our South Island backpacking trip. On the train to Queenstown, friendly Kiwi engineers Ron and Ken let us ride in the engine cab. (Alan got to blow the horn.) Lovely Lake Te Anau (tee ah'-now), south of Queenstown. On the glorious Milford Track -- by the rivers, above the clouds, and on top of the world. Backpacking the Abel Tasman track. In March, we were on hand at the America's Cup Village when the Kiwis won the Auld Mug. Shoulder-to-shoulder singing, drinking, and dancing on the wharf lasted well into the wee hours. Kiwis definitely know how to party. Dinner with Sea Witch and weather guru Bob McDavitt at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron, home to the America's Cup. We had a great time aboard with Richard & Kim, fellow Dallasites doing a locum tenens down under. Game night aboard Heartsong III with Ferric Star and Sea Witch: Runners-up Alan, Dave, Jeff & Ann wear their booby prizes, as winner Gail responds appropriately. |
