Eritrea
The port of
Massawa has not yet recovered from decades of war and famine. The
truck at right is full of bags of grain marked "USA Relief,"
unloaded from cargo ships all day every day. (Made us proud.)
Our taxi driver thought we were nuts for
making him pull over so we could photograph the camels. The driver,
by the way, was a 10-year veteran of Eritrea's war for independence.
In Asmara, Liza
& Gail (from Sea Witch) enjoyed meeting some local residents.
Central Eritrea
is mostly barren mountainous desert, where life must be very hard indeed,
and women still haul firewood down the mountain on their backs. (Center photo by Sea
Witch.)
