Piracy Reports in Indonesia

Here are verbatim reports we received between October 2002 and January 2003 over Inmarsat-C of piracy in Indonesia.  All of the attacks reported during that time period were on commercial shipping, not private yachts.

Please note that dates are usually given in international format of day.month.year, so that 19.01.2003 is January 19, 2003.

Banjarmasin 2003

19.01.2003 at 0100 lt in position 03:43s - 114:25e, taboneo anchorage, off banjarmasin, indonesia.

five pirates in a boat approached a bulk carrier. one pirate armed with a long knife boarded via hawse pipe. alert duty crew foiled the attack by splashing sand to his eyes.

Bintan Island 2003

11.01.2003 at 0400 at sg. buntung, tg. uban, bintan island, indonesia.

about ten pirates armed with knives and guns boarded a tug and barge at anchor and hijacked them. crew jumped into the water. they were rescued later but one crewmember drowned.  

Bintan Island 2002

NAVAREA XI WARNING 19.11.2002.

WHILE UNDERWAY, PIRATES ARMED WITH LONG KNIVES BOARDED CONTAINER SHIP. ENTERED THE BRIDGE AND THREATENED DUTY OFFICER, DUTY OFFICER RAISED THE ALARM. PIRATES ESCAPED EMPTY HANDED. SHIPS IN VICINITY KEEP A SHARP LOOKOUT.
